SPEECH BY THE CHIEF MINISTER OF PENANG

A very good afternoon to all of you.
First and foremost, I would like to express my profound gratitude to Chung Ling High School for giving me the opportunity to officiate this purposeful event which is the Chung Ling International Model United Nations Camp 2019. I applaud the effort and initiative that Chung Ling High school has taken to become the pioneer in organising such an event which has never been done before, in line with the theme of this event ‘Blazing The Trail’.
Chung Ling High School has organised various international student camps over the past few years. However, this year, I am well and truly pleased that Chung Ling High School has decided to take a big step forward and organise an international student camp that incorporates the elements of Model United Nations (MUN) into it.
As we all know, a 21st century learner must not only know the basic 3Rs which are reading, writing and arithmetic but must also possess skills that are widely known as 4Cs which are communication, collaboration, creativity and critical-thinking. Understanding the 3Rs will only help you excel in your academics but mastering the 4Cs will help you succeed in the modern world.
Participants of this camp,
You all are the future leaders of your respective countries. Therefore, it is crucial for you to possess the 4Cs that will make you stand out amongst the rest. This year’s international Model United Nations camp will serve as a great platform for you to develop these soft skills. You will get the chance to apply the 4Cs while conducting various activities throughout the camp. You shall learn on how to communicate with other participants of different nationalities and share your thoughts with each other. Collaboration is applied when you work together with your group members to solve issues raised during the MUN conference. Besides that, creativity and critical thinking can be developed through the MUN conference as well, as you are required to think outside the box and see things in a different perspective in order to come out with solutions that will solve the issues raised.
MUN is basically an educational simulation in which students can learn about diplomacy, international relations, and the United Nations. The delegates in an MUN conference require speaking, debating, and writing skills, in addition to critical thinking, teamwork, and leadership abilities. One of its main purpose is to engage delegates and allow them to develop deeper understanding into current world issues. You will also become acquainted with global issues and have a greater understanding of the problems that affect our world.

The Penang State Government understands the improvement in understanding and development of these soft skills, amongst the citizens and especially the future generation, is something extremely important to achieve the Penang2030 goals, which are aligned with selected sustainable development goals (SGDs) of the United Nation. The Penang State Government’s approach is to encourage citizens to participate in policy making and to take responsibility for their own future. Knowing as a fact that the future generation plays a vital role in shaping the future, the Penang State Government fully supports and encourages the initiatives and efforts to educate and develop the future generations, as we aim to steer them to be more proactive and to exercise greater control over their lives with a more optimistic and rational thinking. The Penang State government hope with such approach, we are not only able to achieve the goals of the Penang2030 but also be able to inspire and shape more high-calibre leaders of the future, regardless of race, religion, gender or even nationality.
Finally, before I end my speech, I would like to wish all the participants, both foreign and local alike to have a wonderful time and enjoy themselves during the camp. Besides having fun, reap the most you can through the learning experience in the MUN conference as well. I hope that the experience gained and the skills acquired through the camp will be able to enhance yourselves and develop you to become a better person with a stronger character.
