Speech By Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng During The Opening Of The The Top @Komtar On 18.12.2016.
REBIRTH OF THE NEW PENANG SYMBOLISED BY THE REBIRTH OF THE NEW KOMTAR
WITH THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF THE RM200 MILLION THE TOP@KOMTAR PROJECT.
A very good morning to everyone.
First let me thank YB Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz for representing the Deputy Prime Minister, who told me he wanted to come but could not at the last minute because of an important assignment given by the Prime Minister.
I have been working at Komtar Tower for the past eight years since 2008, and let me tell you, what an incredible transformation this is! In 2008 Komtar was a sad sight that no one wanted to go. This iconic building that was once the tallest building in South-East Asia had been abandoned to be left to die. But we never lost faith and never gave up. Finally today Komtar, has been given a new lease on life.
We are proud to tell the world that Penang has seen a rebirth of a new icon – New Komtar with The Top@Komtar. New Komtar with The Top@Komtar, symbolises the incredible journey Penang have taken over the last 8 years to pick itself up after falling into decline. We have seen a revival of both tourism and manufacturing industry to be a dynamic Penang, and now New Komtar with The Top@Komtar is reborn as a symbol of success from the wreckage of failure.
For this, on behalf of the Penang State Government, I would like to our utmost appreciation to Datuk Seri Richard Koh and Dato Jean Koh from the Only World Group (OWG) for their success in turning this beloved landmark of Penang into a “hot and happening” spot. Confidence in the new Penang has convinced them to invest RM200 million for this refurbishment of Komtar. We thank you Datuk Seri Richard Koh and Dato Jean Koh.
Penang’s success is Malaysia’s success. As YB Datuk Seri Nazri stressed repeatedly, any increase in tourism is good for Malaysia. Penang Hill has increased from 200,000 passengers a year to 1.6 million this year. We thank Datuk Seri Nazri for wanting to build a new RM150 million cable car to Penang Hill. Our Penang International Airport recorded the second largest growth in Malaysia, exceeding the maximum passenger capacity of 6.5 million passengers.
Let me praise YB Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz for his success in making Malaysia a new international tourist spot. We shall work together with the Federal government to grow tourism in Penang. Economy-wise, Penang is a thriving industrialised state with with 400 MNCs calling us home. Despite being the second smallest state, Penang contributes 7% to the country’s GDP and nearly RM7 billion in taxes and duties annually to the Federal government.
We know that for Penang to succeed, we need to transform Penang into an international and intelligent city with world-class tourist attractions. The new Komtar under Datuk Seri Richard Koh and Dato Jean Koh has given us THE TOP@Komtar to put us back on the global map with the glass “Rainbow Skywalk”, letting us see all the way down from 68 storeys! Prepare to be terrified and amazed!
Not only can visitors enjoy the 360 degree panoramic views of Penang, but you can also have fun in a host of first-of-their kind theme attractions, including a Jurassic Research Center (with 200 dinosaurs), Malaysia’s longest digital screen, 5D Ocean Explorer and the latest in the world a 7D Discovery Motion Theater, an upside down symphony orchestra, the Penang Tech Dome of science and technology and lots more!
Foodies will also find an incredible array of food here, from street food to fine dining establishments with world-class Chinese and Malay restaurants; best of all, THE TOP also gives tourists a taste of Penang’s famous durian and also Tongkat Ali. So let the fun begin!
