PENANG BRIDGE INTERNATIONAL MARATHON PRIZE GIVING CEREMONY

SPEECH BY CHIEF MINISTER OF PENANG
PENANG BRIDGE INTERNATIONAL MARATHON PRIZE GIVING CEREMONY

ON 26TH NOVERMBER 2017

First of all I would like to congratulate the Penang Bridge International Marathon Committee for another successful event. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone here today especially the wonderful runners, sponsors and volunteers who have been participating in the Penang Bridge International Marathon annually.

The Penang Bridge International Marathon is a unique run that brings thousands of people to Penang to enjoy the beautiful view from the iconic Penang Bridge. This year we are delighted to welcome 35,000 runners from 65 countries to Penang.

Named as the “Largest Bridge Marathon” for 4 consecutive years, the Penang Bridge International Marathon has placed Penang as one of the leading destinations for Sports Tourism in the region. We are Number 1 in investments in Malaysia, we also want to be Number 1 in marathon in Malaysia! Aside for the annual run, Penang is also home to a variety of sports events such as the “I Love Penang Run” which has recently entered the Malaysian Book of Records. In addition to that, Penang will also host the renowned Asia Pacific Masters Games in 2018.

Long distance running is not merely a sport but also a test of patience and perseverance. The Penang Bridge International Marathon has long served as a platform for both professional athletes and amateur runners to personally challenge themselves physically and mentally to endure our challenging route and tropical weather.

The Penang State Government have always been an aggressive advocate for healthy living. I believe Penang Bridge International Marathon reflects the spirit of our state motto “Safer, Cleaner, Greener and Healthier Penang.”

I hope all the runners today had an enjoyable time and hope to see you again at Penang Bridge International Marathon 2018!
