The Wembley, Penang

What a wonderful week this has been for our Business Events industry. Just yesterday we announced Penang’s win of the World Seafood Congress 2019, becoming the first Asian destination to host this international association congress of over 50 years old.

And today, we are launching yet another Penang product, one that will capture the attention of the international Business Events market, and drive more business to Penang. The ‘Penang Beyond Meetings Itinerary’ supplement is a comprehensive guide to Penang’s incentive offerings.

It fully captures the essence of Penang’s unlimited Experiences Unfiltered, and the wide range of activities we have to offer to Business Events delegates.

Ladies and gentlemen,

The Business Events industry has proven to be a main driver for Penang's rising economy. Last year, Penang recorded 1251 events with an estimated economic impact of RM808 million. This year, the mandate has been given to Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau – PCEB – to hit the RM1 billion mark.

In May of 2016, PCEB launched its ‘Experiences Unfiltered’ brand campaign. Through the campaign, PCEB has been actively marketing Penang as an exciting and unique destination for Business Events.

What sets Penang apart from other destinations in the region is our attractive mix of diverse unique venues and attractions with some of the best and authentic Asian experiences.

Part of PCEB’s initiative to push Penang to the forefront of the international Business Events market is to build a strong and cohesive Team Penang. It was through the effort of Team Penang that we won the World Seafood Congress 2019 bid.

The Team Penang is a three-way alliance between the Penang State Government, the state’s Business Events industry and the stakeholders, namely the associations, corporates, agencies, businesses and the public.

The Penang Beyond Meetings Itinerary Supplement that we are launching today is also a fruit of Team Penang. With the consultation of five Penang-based destination management companies, PCEB created this itinerary supplement.

I am also happy to note that the supplement will be making its international debut next week in Bangkok at the IT & CMA trade show.

I hope to see more collaborative projects and products from Team Penang. Always remember this saying – Innovate or Die!

In as much as Penang is a dynamic state and the Penang State Government is leading with the development of Penang, we need our stakeholders – the businesses and the public to also lead in their respective fields. This is how we, as a state, will continue to rise in the international arena.

Thank you.

George Town, Penang

Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen;

I am very proud to announce that Penang has been selected as the first Asian destination in history to host the World Seafood Congress that will be held in September 2019.

The World Seafood Congress was initiated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and is owned by The International Association of Food Inspectors (IAFI).

Each congress is organised by a selected institute in the host country and was first hosted in Halifax in 1969. The congress is considered a platform for the exchange of information, ideas, and methodologies for the seafood sector, as well as on inspection, quality management, and seafood processing technology. The state's support for this congress is RM500,000 whereas the estimated economic impact of this 500 delegates, 3-day congress is estimated at RM3million. But more importantly is the global recognition of Penang as an important site for fishing and and fish farming.

Ladies and gentlemen,

The Team Penang delegation led by Penang Convention & Exhibition Bureau (PCEB), an agency under the Penang State Government, and local host Penang Institute, Malaysia’s leading research institute and think-tank put together a winning bid. We showcased the best expertise, venues and services that Penang has to support and organise an international association congress.

The Team Penang delegation also included Penang State Government officials, namely Penang State Exco for Religious Affairs, Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs, YB Dato’ Abdul Malik, Penang State Exco for Agriculture, Agro-Based Industries, Health and Rural Development, YB Dr. Afif Bahardin, and ADUN Jawi YB Soon Lip Chee. The commitment and support of the state government contributed has led to Penang successfully securing the bid against other Asia countries like Thailand, China and Japan.

Ladies and gentlemen,

It is of great honour to us that the first World Seafood Congress in Asia will be held here. We get to create a legacy for the larger fishery and aquaculture industry in Asia.

Congresses like this are as important to the host destinations as well the delegates. We get to discover and learn from the experts regarding the sector and what we can do to improve it. In 2016, Penang’s fishery sector recorded a revenue of RM1.3 billion or USD 300 million, basically the largest fish farming on the sea in Malaysia. The fish farms are located off Sungai Udang near the second Penang Bridge and also off Pulau Jerejak. We believe this congress will bring more awareness and innovation to our fishery industry and as well as expose ourselves to world standards and practices.

Ladies and gentlemen,

The future for business events in Penang is looking positive. Penang is home to the world’s first hybrid solar powered convention centre – the Setia SPICE Convention Centre. By 2019, we will have over 20,000 rooms per night in accommodations ranging from five-star hotels and resorts, business class hotels, boutique hotels and serviced residences.

With PCEB actively marketing Penang as a Business Events destination and bidding for events, I hope that Penang will get to host many more international association congresses.

Thank you.

Speech by Chief Minister of Penang

The Opening Ceremony of Broadcom Global Distribution Warehouse
Batu Kawan Industrial Park, Penang

19 September 2017

American Companies Are Still Investing In Penang
Yang Berhormat Dato' Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Minister of International Trade and Industry
Dato' Azman Mahmud, Chief Executive Officer of MIDA
Dato' BC Ooi,  Senior Vice President, Global Operations, Broadcom Limited
Dato’ Rosli , General Manager of PDC
Dato’ Loo Lee Lian, CEO of Invest Penang
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Good morning. I am pleased to be present today at the opening ceremony of Broadcom Global Distribution Warehouse at Batu Kawan Industrial Park. This Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) by this top American developer and global supplier of products based on analog and digital semiconductor technologies, marks the continued growth of investments into Penang.
Penang - E&E Sector Growth and Hub of Global Distribution
The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics (WSTS) has projected that the global semiconductor sales will increase by 11.5% to reach USD377.8 billion this year, and the Asia Pacific region will experience the highest growth of 12.4%. Out of the RM59 billion approved investment recorded from 2008-2016, RM14 billion or 24% were from US investors, which makes US the largest FDI contributor to the Penang economy.
Penang is strategically located, with good connectivity a well-developed cargo distribution network supported by the Penang International Airport for air cargo and the Penang Port for sea freight. Batu Kawan is also strategically connected to the major highways such as the North South Expressway for land cargo transport.
The value of exports for Penang in Q1 2017 is RM52.9 billion an increase of 22% y-o-y compared to RM43.5 billion in Q1 2016. Penang’s export contribution to the total national export is 23.5%. This achievement in our exports to global markets is supported via the distribution, logistics and warehousing facilities in Penang.
Re-investment of Broadcom Global Distribution Hub in Penang
I am pleased that Broadcom will be relocating their two offshore warehouses into Batu Kawan Industrial Park and making this facility into their annual Global Distribution Warehouse, which is expected to manage an shipment of 4 billion units, directly supporting Broadcom Limited’s RM64 billion revenue. Broadcom Limited's market capitalization is now #2, in the semiconductor industry (exclude memory manufacturers), valued at USD 97billion or RM445billion. The investments into this facility, excluding freight expenses, is valued at RM59 million.
Broadcom and Penang have grown together through the years. The company has deep roots in Penang starting from 1972 where they first set-up their operation in Penang as part of Hewlett Packard, located in Bayan Lepas Free Industrial Zone.
Clearly American companies are still investing in Penang. Other than the RM14 billion investments made by American companies from 2008-2016 mentioned earlier, I wish to add that this year itself American companies such as Boston Scientific has injected “hundreds of millions of Ringgit” and UST Global has announced the expansion of their new Bayan Lepas facility with a proposed headcount of 2,000 in Penang by 2020.
We also wish to thank the Minister of International Trade & Industry for the support given. The State government is of course supportive of Broadcom’s Global Operations consolidation and strategic synergy focused on R&D, Product engineering and Global supply chain.
As of July 2017, Broadcom Penang has 500 employees to support various positions mainly upper and middle management, planners, finance, product engineering, development and testing. Through the years, talents in Penang have been nurtured and given development opportunities to grow by Broadcom and the fruits of these efforts can be seen by the many global industry leaders from Penang.
Dato’ Tan Hock E, the Chief Executive Officer, President and Executive Director of Broadcom Limited is one such exemplary leader from Penang. Dato’ Tan is a well-known corporate figure instrumental in the successful M&A of Avago and Broadcom. He previously captained MNCs such as IDT and Integrated Circuit Systems.
Another Penang ‘lang’ is Dato’ BC Ooi, the Senior Vice President, Global Operations at Broadcom, responsible for managing worldwide manufacturing, outsourcing, procurement and logistics, planning and quality programs.
Companies based in Penang are also beneficiaries to Broadcom’s growth. According to Broadcom, some of their direct local partners in Penang includes Inari Technology, TF-AMD Microelectronics, ASE Electronics, Aemulus, National Instruments, Xcerra, Exis Tech, Experior Technology, Tessolve. Their outsource partners also engage with companies such as Vitrox and MI Equipments. This again shows the dynamic ecosystem and supply chain in Penang, reflected in our tagline ‘Powered in Penang’.
Broadcom’s Batu Kawan Global Distribution Warehouse will spur significant supply chain spin-offs in Penang and northern area of Malaysia. With Broadcom’s investment in this new global distribution centre, over 300 additional direct job opportunities will be created in Penang. Local freight and transportation activities will increase.
The State also wishes to acknowledge Broadcom’s important contribution to the public-private-people STEM initiatives in Penang, where the company has contributed to the Penang Science Cluster and the Penang International Science Fair, which is the largest science fair in Malaysia. This opening ceremony today further strengthens Penang as an established destination of choice for global investors.

I wish to once again congratulate Broadcom on the completion of this facility. As always, you can count on the State and Federal Government through agencies such as the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), InvestPenang and Penang Development Corporation to continue to facilitate and provide assistance whenever required.
