Speech by Chief Minister of Penang
During The Signing Ceremony between KDU College Penang & Dongseo University

at KDU College Penang
Friday, February 6, 2015

Good morning.

On behalf of the State Government of Penang, let me first of all extend a warm welcome to all of you, especially the professors from Dongseo University, Korea.

I am truly honored to step into KDU College Penang and stand here once again to witness another significant milestone for KDU College Penang.

I would like to acknowledge Paramount Education (formerly known as KDU Education Group) for its continuous efforts in supporting the Penang state government’s plan in developing Penang into a global hub for creative multimedia industry.

This is another initiative by Paramount Education after the acquisition of 30 acres land in Batu Kawan under the wing of Paramount Corporation Berhad in Mac 2014, which will see Paramount Corporation building Penang’s first university metropolis in Batu Kawan. In line with Penang’s efforts to promote quality education and knowledge-based projects in Batu Kawan, this university metropolis – to be developed by Paramount Property (the property development arm of Paramount Corporation) – will be anchored by a new purpose-built campus for KDU Penang.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Penang possesses huge potential to develop as an international and intelligent state. We believe by collaborating with professional institutions, we are able to cultivate human capital in various areas and better position Penang as a global hub for education and creative multimedia.

investPenang launched the “first-in-Malaysia” Business Processing Outsourcing-Information Technology Outsourcing (CPO-ITO) Hub last year, which is inclusive of a Creative Animation Triggers (CAT) within the George Town Heritage Enclave. This RM11.3 billion project is a joint-venture agreement with Temasek Singapore.

This CAT aims to enhance Penang’s capability in producing world-class content in animation and of course ultimately to bring the good name of Penang in creative multimedia to international arena. Simultaneously, it also drives entrepreneurship in the creative industry.

Today, the signing between KDU College Penang and Dongseo University, Korea marks a significant collaboration in producing qualified specialists who are able to adapt and apply comprehensive knowledge of digital contents production to complement the Penang state government initiatives in promoting Penang Creative Animation Triggers.

As informed, this collaboration involved approximately half-a-million ringgit since it is still in the initial stage of procuring all the hardware and software.

ZI am truly pleased to see the coming together of two premier higher education institutions in this collaboration – KDU College Penang, a tertiary education provider in Penang renowned for its solid industry linkages and experienced teaching faculty; and Dongseo University, a leading university in Korea with campuses in US and China.

They will commence two new double-degree programmes namely B.A. (Hons.) Creative Multimedia and B.A. in Communication (Hons) major in New Media to benefit the younger generation especially our young Malaysian.

This new collaboration will create more opportunities for students in KDU to pursue their dream career in creative digital animation industry and allow more openings to foster creative and talented artists in this industry.

Last but not least, I would like to thank KDU College Penang and Dongseo University Korea for this partnership which will propel Penang into another highly innovative market – the creative multimedia industry.

Thank you.

TEKS UCAPAN Y.A.B. TUAN LIM GUAN ENG, KETUA MENTERI PULAU PINANG PADA 5 FEBRUARI 2015 DI MAJLIS PELANCARAN PROJEK MENAIK TARAF JEJANTAS PEJALAN KAKI DI PERSIMPANGAN JALAN PENANG/ JALAN BURMA/ JALAN DR. LIM CHWEE LEONG

10. Dengan ini, saya melancarkan projek menaik taraf jejantas pejalan kaki di persimpangan Jalan Penang/ Jalan Dr. Lim Chwee Leong/ Jalan Burma.

The Opening of Haemonetics Malaysia

Posted in Dari Meja Ketua Menteri

Speech by Chief Minister of Penang, Tuan Lim Guan Eng at the Opening of Haemonetics Malaysia at Batu Kawan in Penang, 5 February 2015

A very good morning and welcome, selamat datang to Penang.

As the chief minister, it is my pleasure to be here this morning to officiate the opening of Haemonetics’ new manufacturing facilities here in Batu Kawan Industrial Park.
Founded in Massachusetts in 1971 by Jack Latham, Haemonetics began by the manufacturing and sale of ONE SINGLE perfectly designed component for a new blood collection device: a centrifuge disposable called the "Latham Bowl' that could automate the separation of blood.

More than 40 years later, Haemonetics is THE Global leader in Blood Management Solutions. Improving lives by their suite of integrated devices, information management and consulting services which collectively help improve patient care, ensure patient safety, and reduce costs for blood and plasma collectors, hospitals, and patients around the world. Haemometics has invested RM 105 Million for the setup of the new facility here in Batu Kawan. The company will further invest another RM 50 million over the next 2 years to install machinery/ equipment system to start up the Whole Blood operation.

Penang is proud that this global leader Haemonetics has selected Penang as the springboard to expand their global footprint and making Haemonetics Malaysia the second largest of its manufacturing plants worldwide.

The principal reason for choosing Penang as a location of choice is the availability of human talent; Penang as a livable city that is clean, green, safe and healthy; as well as good governance based on the principles of competency, accountability and transparency. This can be shown by the RM 40 billion in investments from 2008 – 2013 as compared to the previous 6-year period of 2002 – 2007 of RM 21 billion.

And finally, I am certain greater employment opportunities will abound, especially for the knowledge-based workers in Penang with Haemonetics' pledge to invest significantly in the development of skilled engineering talents in Penang and Malaysia. To date, there are 200 employees, and the manpower is expected to increase to 800 by 2017.

The opening of this plant today is a testament to the growing success of Haemonetics, and also reaffirms their long-term commitment to Malaysia.

Once again, I would like to congratulate Haemonetics Malaysia on its official opening today and wish them tremendous success for the future.

Thank you.
