Jade Emperor Festival Or 9th Day Of Chinese New Year Message By Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng In Komtar, George Town On 7.2.2014.

Penang Will Counter UMNO’s Dangerous Games Of Playing With The Fires Of Racial And Religious Hatred With The Weapons Of Social Justice, Economic Prosperity, Good Governance And  Clean Leadership.

During this year’s Chinese New Year festivities, the regular topic of discussion in family reunion gatherings is how the toxic atmosphere of playing with the fires of racial and religious hatred has paralysed the pursuit of happiness and hastened the brain drain by accelerating the exodus of human talent. Penang will counter UMNO’s dangerous games of playing with the fires of racial and religious hatred with the weapons of social justice, economic prosperity, good governance and clean leadership.
Recent events coupled with the refusal to address the pressing issues of entrenched corruption and cronyism as well as price hikes that threaten the livelihood of ordinary Malaysians, have lent credence to the view that BN has stopped governing because they no longer know how to rule. The PR Penang state government’s success in becoming the first state in Malaysian history to wipe out poverty and becoming the only state not to raise local services such as quit rent, assessment, business license fees and water tariffs has made UMNO desperate.
The performance of Penang PR has made UMNO more desperate when even the Prime Minister disclosed in Parliament that Penang was No.1 in attracting Foreign Direct Investment(FDI) from 2010 to August 2013, with RM19.7 billion out of Malaysia’s total FDI of RM103 billion. Penang is not only the village champion but also now a world champion when Lonely Planet listed Penang as the No.1 food destination of the world.
The violent demonstrations by UMNO supporters in Penang, the attack by UMNO supporters on a senior Malay civil servant carrying out enforcement action, the attempted fire-bomb attack on a Catholic church in Penang and the call by a UMNO division to ban the 200-year old practice of open selling of pork in a 95% non-Muslim area in George Town is clearly intended to distract attention from UMNO’s price hikes even at the cost of destroying the very foundations of a nation-state so assiduously built by UMNO’s founders Tunku Abdul Rahman and Tun Abdul Razak.
Since Merdeka, official government statistics have revealed that more than 2 millon highly-skilled and talented Malaysians have left the country. In their place are more than 5 million unskilled foreign migrant workers from Indonesia, Bangladesh, Myanmar and Vietnam – clearly a loss in exchange value in skill gaps and management expertise for Malaysia.
Even these unskilled foreign migrants sent back RM20 billion in remittances in 2012, a figure expected to increase to RM30 billion this year. With so many unskilled foreign migrants, some Malaysians are feeling like strangers in their own land, particularly in Sabah.
Malaysians must not lose hope but compel UMNO to back down from playing with the fires of religious and racial hatred by focusing on the economy. Malaysians must persist to insist in integrity and transparency to fight the cancer of corruption, the pursuit of excellence and competitiveness must not be given up, give hope to the future by providing a platform of equal opportunities not only to build human talent but allow them to realise their potential and most important of all that social harmony can only be achieved by celebrating our differences.
The public can not compromise in demanding good management and productivity skills in our political leaders. Political leaders must be subjected to the criteria of adopting sound management techniques of setting targets, rewarding performance and ensuring that the results can be measured.
Only with an objective outcome-based administration can we ensure that the pusuit of happiness is not an empty dream but a vision that can be realised through hard work, collaborative effort and respect for rule of law. There can be no rule of law when justice easily falls victim to power. There can only be rule of law when our legal system protects rights of all citizens and serve the people.

Press Conference By Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng In Komtar, George Town, Penang On 29.1.2014.

Penang Will Host the 29th WOMEN’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2013 On March 15-23, 2014 in sPICE, Penang.

Penang will host the 29th WOMEN’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP 2013 for the 1st time in our history on March 15-23, 2014 at sPICE (Subterranean Penang International Conference & Exhibition Centre) in Penang. This follows the cancellation of the 2013 Women’s World Championship when both Hong Kong and Egypt rejected proposals to organize it last year.

Penang aspires to be a sporting city as part of a clean, green, healthy and safe Penang. WSA’s agreement to permit Penang to host this event is a strong recognition that Penang possesses the facilities, amenities and infrastructure of a fitting location for an international event as well as the experience and expertise to organize a world championship.

The cancellation of the Women’s World Squash Championship last year meant world No. 1 Nicol David was compelled to keep her world crown for an extended period. The Penang state government felt that it was a real shame that Penang’s very own world squash queen will not be able to add to her already impressive collection of seven world titles earned in 2005, 2006, 2008 - 2012. Malaysians, especially Penangites, are eagerly awaiting her to defend her title for a record eighth time.

For this reason, the Penang state government decided to step in to allow the 2013 championship to continue as well as give Penangites an unique opportunity to see our very own squash queen in action, and hopefully live up to expectations by winning the World title again. The Women’s Squash Association (WSA) premier event, which may cost up to RM1 million, will involve a prize money of USD 120,000. The state government will be approaching sponsors to assist in sharing the cost of this tournament. We are also happy to announce that Eastin Hotel will be the official hotel for this Championship.

A permanent show court or demountable all-glass court must be used for the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final of the Championship. This world championship would generate truly worldwide TV and general media coverage.

The Women’s World Championship feature a 32 player main draw played over 5 / 6 days as agreed, and a preceding maximum 64 player qualification draw played over 3 days, March 15th to 17th. The qualification draw will be held at the Nicol David International Squash Center, Bukit Dumbar with the final games at sPICE.

World class players from 20 countries will be involved. Streamers publishing this World Championship will be put up in Penang beginning today and we urge all Penangites to give their support. Tickets for the world championship will be sold after Chinese New Year.

2014 Chinese New Year Message (EN/CN)

2014 Chinese New Year Message By Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng In Komtar, George Town On 29.1.2014.

Penang’s Outcome-Based Model Of Governance That Is Centred On Competency, Accountability And Transparency Will Bring Dignity To The Rakyat And Hope For A Brighter Future.

Penang’s outcome-based model of governance that is centered on competency, accountability and transparency will bring dignity to the rakyat and hope for a brighter future. Penang can be the hope of a new model of governance where moderation is preferred over extremism and performance wins over cronyism.

The state government has relentlessly pursued a transformation of Penang into an international and intelligent city that allows Penang to escape the middle-income trap into a high-income economy as well as ensuring economic equity with balanced development in infrastructure and economic programs, cash aid and creating history as the first state in Malaysia to wipe out poverty. All this is achieved without any price hikes in 2014 by the state government whether in quit rent, assessment, business licenses or water tariffs.

It is critical that we rely not only on savings and cost-cutting but also on generating revenue sources. The state government is moving up the value chain from a budget-based to an outcome-based administration, with emphasis not just on optimizing “value for money” but also on the broad effectiveness in achieving the desired socio-development goals.

Developing and attracting human talent is the critical success factor for Penang. An ecosystem of high quality educational system from primary to tertiary level, good and reliable healthcare as well as a dynamic entertainment, art, culture and heritage center that will allow the best and brightest to live, learn work and play in Penang.

Penang was No.1 in terms of investment in Malaysia from 2010 to August 2013. On the tourism front, we have now two theme parks Escape Theme Park and WWW water theme Park in Batu Ferringhi.

We have finally succeeded in drawing in IKEA to come to Batu Kawan, the first IKEA store outside Kuala Lumpur.  A premium retail outlet, the second one in Malaysia after Johor, will also be in Batu Kawan. Batu Kawan will also be the home of universities like KDU and UK’s Hull that will offer courses in law, engineering, logistics, business studies and accounting.

Penang has been voted by Guardian newspaper of United Kingdom as the 8th best tourist destination in the world, the only one from South-East Asia. Penang and Kuala Lumpur is also the 3rd best place to retire in the world. Finally for the first time in history, Penang will make Malaysia proud by hosting the first World Women Squash Championships in Malaysia in March 2014.

In this Year of the Horse, we strive to preach pragmatism that seek practical solutions that can broaden opportunities for the young and seek a stronger presence of women.  We are mindful of the fact that there can be no rule of law when justice easily falls victim to power.  Any legal system or established set of institutions must be solely devised to protect the rights of citizens and serve ordinary people.

We believe that Penang can prove that social harmony is best achieved through celebrating our differences not depriving or oppressing another’s rights. Let us prove that economic prosperity can best be achieved by giving everyone equal opportunities, integrity in leadership and sustainable development.
