A very good morning to all of you.

First and foremost, I would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you from near and far who are participating in George Town Heritage Walk 2019. I am pleased to see so many of you here with us early this morning at the historical Lebuh Pantai (Beach Street).

The George Town Heritage Walk 2019 is held in conjunction with the George Town Festival and George Town Heritage Celebrations to commemorate George Town World Heritage Day which falls on the 7th of July. Obtaining UNESCO Heritage Site status in 2008, George Town is set to have a mesmerising celebration of arts, culture and heritage through the George Town Festival which is in its tenth edition this year.

I am truly glad to find out and to witness that they are 1,500 participants from 12 countries joining the 5-km heritage walk today. This is indeed a great achievement and opportunity for all of us to immerse in the enchanting street views and appreciate the sights and sounds of the remarkable historical landmarks in George Town World Heritage Site.

I am confident that you will get to gain an in-depth insight into the rich culture and heritage of George Town through this meaningful walk. From Kapitan Keling Mosque, Goddess of Mercy Temple, Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi to Pinang Peranakan Mansion and more, George Town’s beautiful and vibrant heritage has much to be honoured and celebrated. Also, prepare to be surprised by some fantastic pop-up performances by international artists along the way to lighten up your Sunday morning.

Ladies and gentlemen,

The George Town Heritage Walk 2019  serves to kickstart George Town Festival which is set to take centre stage in Penang from 13 to 28 July, celebrating local and international works of art. The theme of this year, ‘A Festival for Everyone’ stresses on the idea of making arts accessible for all with lots of free-to-attend events and they are certainly something that you do not want to miss. The 16-day long Festival will feature a total of 150 programmes, including visual arts, theatre, music, dance, comedy, film, photography and many more. Be sure to mark your schedules as ‘busy’ or ‘occupied’ during these 16 days to immerse yourself completely in the arts, culture and heritage of George Town.

On behalf of the Penang State Government, I wish that everyone here will have a fun and healthy morning while reminiscing wonderful memories. Let us all enjoy ourselves!

Thank you.

US Independence Day Gala 2019

Equatorial Hotel, Penang

5 July 2019

Speech by YAB Chow Kon Yeow, Chief Minister of Penang

Good evening. As we commemorate the 243rd US Independence Day, may I take this opportunity to welcome back Her Excellency Madam Kamala Shirin Lakhdir as well as to acknowledge the warm friendship and significant bilateral relationship we have built over many years with the United States.

With an investment history of more than 60 years and counting, US investors are amongst the largest FDI contributors with an accumulated value of approximately RM14.8 billion for the years 2008-2018. In the recent data released by MIDA, I am happy to share that US investment itself accounted for almost RM6.2 billion in Quarter 1 of 2019 – which is 73% share of the total FDI recorded for the State. These investments have contributed to job creation and provided opportunities for our supply chain ecosystem to thrive through knowledge and technology transfer. With our 50 years of industrial experience and your unremitting support, I am sure Penang will continue to rise to the challenge of being “Asia’s Silicon Valley”.

I understand the theme for this year is “to commemorate the historic 50th anniversary of a man landing on the moon as well as advance technology”. While the late Neil Armstrong may have said that it was “a small step for man, a giant leap for mankind” – the breakthrough discoveries of numerous technologies since then have opened our lives to multiple possibilities. Disciplines such as Big Data, Internet of Things and Industry 4.0 are leading our present-day conversations. It is our fervent hope that greater co-operation is fostered in the future so that Penang too can contribute towards more discoveries for mankind.

Our commitment towards collective growth for the betterment of the state and nation is further reflected in the guiding principles of Penang2030 – a vision that propels Penang to become A Family-Focused, Green and Smart State that Inspires the Nation. A particular strategic initiative that I wish to highlight today is to advance the readiness of our local manufacturing industries for the digital age and the green economy. When the local supply chain ecosystem flourishes, our foreign investments will also benefit in the form of better efficiency, effectiveness and quality of products and services.

On this note, I would like to thank the many US companies and individuals here for their participation and commitment in the State’s various STEM initiatives. I am also thrilled to share that we will have close to 200 Penang Future Foundation (PFF) graduates, many with First Class honours by end of 2019. This is Penang’s initiative to attract and retain the brightest Malaysian talents. Penang CAT Centre as PFF’s Secretariat will definitely be happy to assist your HR folks in connecting this outstanding talent pool with your organizations. Equally important is to assimilate our undergraduates into the industry. I hope more strategic partnerships can be cultivated to produce internship opportunities and programmes.

Our state agencies have provided support to our US investors with their sense of professionalism, speed and business acumen, attributes of which we will continue to uphold. I look ahead to more of such strong collaboration and engagement as we drive the State forward, for the progress of Penang and Malaysia.

Thank you.

5 JULY 2019

Good evening.

First and foremost, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the organizing committee for inviting me here today, to this wonderful recreational and athletic venue to officiate the Padang Kota Red One Badminton Cup 2019.

I had been informed that this 3 day tournament, starting from today until July 7th, 2019 is participated by 32 teams from Indonesia, Philippines, and of course Malaysia with the participation of our former and promising champions. On behalf of the Penang State Government, I would like to extend our warmest welcome and ‘Selamat Datang’ to all of you.

Ladies and gentlemen,

As we all know, badminton is undeniably a popular sport in Malaysia as it is across the globe. It is a sport that not only keeps us healthy in many ways, but it also fosters positive vibes such as teamwork, sportsmanship and friendship. As such, Penang is honoured and proud to be the host of the Padang Kota Red One Badminton Cup 2019 as we aim to promote ‘Health and Friendship Through Sports’.

I believe the gathering of participants here this evening itself is a symbol of friendship from people of all background, getting together for a common goal which is the love for badminton. This is something truly meaningful and significant as it proves that through sports, people from different ethnicity, race, or even nationality can comfortably get together and see eye to eye, leaving behind any differences to focus on that one common goal. Sports, in this case, badminton, certainly is an efficacious way to connect people.

Over the past decades, Penang has been the power house of badminton. We have produced world class champions like Dato’ Wira Lee Chong Wei, Dato’ Eddie Chong and many more. Through badminton, we were able to show the world that we could succeed despite being made up of a heterogeneous society. In fact, it had always been our significant key to success as we allowed our differences to thread us together through friendship and unity, and that, had always been our strength.

As such, I certainly hope that through this sport, all of us here are able to instil the same spirit within ourselves, as it will only help to make us stronger together in the wake of adversity. At the same time, I also hope that we will do our best to nurture and pass on these positive values to the upcoming generations whilst we live a healthy lifestyle through badminton.

I applaud and congratulate the organizers for organizing this event as well as for their initiative and effort to organize a free coaching clinic during this event, for 60 primary school children to nurture and produce more players in badminton amongst the youth.

The Penang State Government is always supportive of sports and recreation within the community. We believe that a united and healthy community will bring about a more productive nation. As such, we will continue our commitment to create a community not only focusing on development, social economy and a smart state but also a ‘greener, healthier and united Penang’ by making sure our aim is in line with our vision - Penang2030 to inspire the nation or even to a greater degree, people of all nation.

To all participants, I wish you well in the competition, and may you have many pleasant memories from this tournament. May this sport lead us all to a healthier and united life. With this, I hereby declare the PADANG KOTA RED ONE BADMINTON CUP 2019 open.

Thank you.
