Members of the media,

Ladies and Gentlemen,

A very good evening to all of you. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for being here to witness the Lights On ceremony for Taman Rekreasi Taman Manggis. Today is a memorable day for Padang Kota and I am excited to be here and to see how this public park is put into good use which is beneficial to the public and especially for the folks who live nearby. I would also like to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt appreciation to those who have had a hand in shaping the transformation of the public park in this beloved city of ours.

First of all, I would like to commend the efforts by the Majlis Bandaraya Pulau Pinang (MBPP), and Majlis Pengurusan Komuniti Kampung Jalan Transfer / Jalan Argyll (MPKK) in this mission to bring us a safer and exciting public park in the heart of George Town where public spaces for recreation purposes is limited.

I would also like to take this opportunity to commend Councillor Mr. Wong Yuee Harng for sponsoring SIX illuminated LED swings which cost more than RM6,000 where it will become an attraction to passer-by and the public at large. This is the first of its kind LED swing in Penang public park and to former Councillor Mr. Gerald Mak who sponsored the colourful tables and chairs which cost more than RM2,500 to enable members of the public to play chess and checkers game.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Quality public parks with suitable amenities are a vital component to the liveability of a city. They are spaces where people can take a breather from the mundane confines of the office instead of their hand-held gadgets, and the hustle and bustle of city life. It is also a place where ties between communities and people are nurtured or even rekindled. Our parks also help in encouraging the public to lead a healthy lifestyle by exercising frequently on the jogging track and using the exercise machines. This public park is also equipped with EIGHT CCTVs to ensure the safety of the users.

I hope that by upgrading this public park for the George Town folks, you will find joy and respite whenever you are seated here. We encourage you to bring your friends and family here to enjoy the moment and to explore what is offered in the very heart of our city.

Thank you.
