SPEECH BY THE CHIEF MINISTER OF PENANG YAB TUAN CHOW KON YEOW FOR THE 71st ANNIVERSARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE PEOPLE’S REPUBLIC OF CHINA VIA ONLINE RECEPTION
To all friends who are now online, a good day to all of you!
Time indeed flies and a year had passed. Today, under the conditions of the New Normal, we are meaningfully gathered here with many members of the diplomatic corps to participate in the reception for the 71st anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China hosted by the Chinese Consulate-General in Penang.
I am truly honoured to be invited by the Chinese Consulate-General in Penang to attend the reception we are now having, and I offer my most cordial greetings and best wishes to everyone who is here today.
Following the rapid development of economic globalisation, China has been a major investor in the fast lane of economic development after your reforms and opening up, hence exerting an important influence on the global economy through your economic miracle.
The achievements by China in the past few decades are obvious to all. Apart from successfully improving the lives of the Chinese people, China has also greatly enhanced her global status and influence. Since 2010, China has become the second largest economy in the world and with the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ by the Chinese government, countries across the world have benefitted through many platforms for international cooperation in less than a decade.
The year 2020 will always be remembered for the effects of Covid-19 on the lives and livelihood of people across the world and the state government of Penang is always concerned on how we can best manage its prevention, revive the economy and in looking after the people’s life balance. This is a big challenge which we are facing.
The success story of how the Chinese authorities managed and responded to the epidemic is a worthy case in point to be studied by the Penang state government.
It remains our hope that the current Covid-19 situation will improve in the shortest time possible in order for everyone around the world to continue with their day-to-day livelihood under the conditions of the New Normal.
Since the forming of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China in 1974, we have always maintained close friendly relations and greatly expanded our cooperation especially in the fields of economic trade, culture, education and tourism.
As far as Penang is concerned, the state government will continue to work closely with the people to achieve the goals and improve the quality of life for Penangites as outlined in the Penang2030 vision of “A Family-Focused Green And Smart State That Inspires The Nation”.
Finally, I would like to once again congratulate the People’s Republic of China for your notable achievements in the past 71 years. The state of Penang is always willing to work closely with you for the promotion and continuous development of Malaysia-China relations which will benefit the peoples of both countries.
Let’s toast for a lasting friendship between the Penang state government and the Consulate-General of the People’s Republic of China in Penang and may the bilateral relations between China and Malaysia achieve greater heights.
