TEKS UCAPAN KETUA MENTERI PULAU PINANG

SEMPENA MAJLIS SAMBUTAN HARI MALAYSIA 2019 PERINGKAT NEGERI PULAU PINANG

16 SEPTEMBER 2019

SP Arena, Seberang Jaya

Sekian, terima kasih.

The Rubber Trade Association of Penang 100th Year Anniversary Dinner

The Rubber Trade Association of Penang 100th Year Anniversary Dinner Speech by

The Right Honourable Chief Minister of Penang, Mr Chow Kon Yeow

15th September 2019, Sunday

Members of the Media, Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen.

First and foremost, I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to the Rubber Trade Association of Penang on its 100th Year Anniversary, an association representing an industry that has played a very important part in the development of Penang up to the 1970s.

Many in the younger generation may not know the importance of rubber to Malaysia, and to Penang.  In fact, at the point of independence, Malaysia supplied about 1/3 of World natural rubber production, and rubber export accounted for about 2/3 of total Malaysian exports and furnished a substantial part of the national revenue. As for Penang, especially George Town that was an entrepot (free port) up to 1969, rubber also played a very vital role then. Export through Penang ports accounted for 1/3 of total Malaysian rubber exports.

Established in 1919, RTAP served as a rubber exchange to facilitate rubber trade and disseminate trading information to its members. After the Malaysian Rubber Exchange was formed, the Association had switched to play a key role in resolving trade disputes amongst members and as a conduit on trade policy debates with the Government. Together with the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the Aceh Trade Association, they led a ten-year effort to slow down the imposition of taxes on import and exports of rubber into the island and the eventual removal of Penang’s Free Port status in 1969.

The cessation of Penang island’s Free Port status had greatly impacted the island economy in the late 1960s.  It impacted many rubber packers and 5 of the 6 milling factories on the island closed and there was a rise in unemployment. Rubber production in Malaysia started to decline after 1988 with almost all the estates switching into oil palm, this again had a second-round impact on driving many of the rubber merchants off their traditional activity. However, astute as they have been, most of them managed to diversify into various other business activities from manufacturing to services.

Apart from business, the RTAP, its leadership and its members were generous donors as well active Board members of an array of Chinese civic society and schools. They were the biggest supporters in funding education and charities in the State.

It is my hope to see continued generousity and support from the Rubber Trade Association of Penang to the State by supporting the Penang2030 vision of a family-focused green and smart state that inspires the nation. It is also a vision that will encourage citizens to participate in policy making and to take responsibility for their own future. The State Government is always concern with the wellbeing of Penang and to make Penang a place that is even more enviable than it already is. At the same time, it is my goal to not leave anyone behind as Penang moves on towards to greater heights. I believe the Rubber Trade Association of Penang can play their part in helping the State to achieve the Penang2030 vision as their experience and expertise will be supportive in the achievement of this vision and the development of the State.

The Rubber Trade Association of Penang (RTAP) had witnessed and participated in the country’s economic development for a century and counting, it is only fitting that they receive our heartiest congratulations on this exceptional milestone.

Syabas and tahniah!

Thank you.

GRAND OPENING OF NEW “WASTE-TO-ECO-FRIENDLY” PRODUCTS MANUFACTURING PLANT OF HENG HUAT GROUP

SPEECH BY YAB CHOW KON YEOW, CHIEF MINISTER OF PENANG FOR THE GRAND OPENING OF NEW “WASTE-TO-ECO-FRIENDLY” PRODUCTS MANUFACTURING PLANT OF HENG HUAT GROUP

14 SEPTEMBER 2019

A very good morning to all of you.

To begin with, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the Heng Huat Group for inviting me here today. It is indeed my pleasure to grace the grand opening of the new “waste-to-eco-friendly” products manufacturing plant of Heng Huat Group.

I would also like to take this opportunity to congratulate and commend Heng Huat Group for attaining the title of ‘The Market Leader’ in the Malaysian coconut fibre field following their successful acquisition of a 97% equity interest in Sabut Kelapa Terengganu Sdn Bhd (SKT) ,which, is also a move that had strengthen Heng Huat Group position as a regional player in the biomass industry.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Heng Huat Group strategic planning, good governance, and desire to grow has certainly become exemplary for our local entrepreneurs to follow. This is something significant to the Penang State Government as we comprehend the importance and need to refine and motivate our local entrepreneurs to the greatest possible extent. This is because entrepreneurs can change the way we live and work, and as such they are often thought as an asset to the state. If successful, their revolutions may improve our standard of living. In short, in addition to creating wealth from their entrepreneurial ventures, they also create jobs and the conditions for a flourishing society.

In line with the Penang2030 vision, the Penang State Government aims to foster an ecosystem that nurtures creative industries and niche business services. Accordingly, the Penang State Government will continue carrying out the state initiatives such as the Penang S.M.A.R.T Centre to assist our local entrepreneurs, while at the same time, I hope that our existing local companies will continue to give their best to strengthen and strive for excellence in their respective fields.

Ladies and gentlemen,

I would like to reiterate that the Penang State Government has consistently emphasized on the word ‘GREEN’ of the Penang2030 vision. It signifies the government’s awareness that there is really no alternative to balanced development. The economy needs to develop to face new challenges brought by Industry 4.0 and other conditions, but the managing of these changes must protect and improve the natural and cultural assets we already have. A well-kept balance between economic growth and ecological protection can help make Penang the model state that we all want it to remain.

As such, the Penang State Government applaud the initiative and efforts of Heng Huat Group in their operation to re-use waste by turning coconut husks that were considered as wastes and openly burnt to an eco-friendly product. I truly wish that our local entrepreneurs will emulate Heng Huat Group to not only invest in thriving their business but also to invest in the preservation of our environment and to engineer ways to transform environmental issues to business opportunities. As a matter of fact, as Heng Huat Group had progressed to Terengganu, I also wish that they will represent the Penang state to inspire others, in particular the east coast of Malaysia, to support the green environment, in line with the Penang2030 vision.

In conclusion, following the success of Heng Huat Group, I surely hope that it will motivate and inspire others to propel themselves in the entrepreneurial and business sector without neglecting the importance of conserving our green environment. Once again, congratulations to Heng Huat Group for your achievements and my best wishes for many more success to come.

Thank you.
