YAB MR. LIM GUAN ENG
Chief Minister of Penang

Official Opening of PMC Clinical Skills & Education Centre Seberang Jaya

17 March 2015

It gives me great pleasure to be here today for the official opening of this new PMC Clinical Skills and Education Centre in Seberang Jaya. I am grateful to the Board of Directors of PMC and the RCSI-UCD Management for the honour they have bestowed on me in inviting me to grace and officiate at the Opening Ceremony of this Centre. I am particularly pleased to welcome our distinguished guests from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and University College Dublin as today is St Patrick’s Day, the National Holiday of Ireland.

Penang has its own St. Patrick Day’s parade that mirrors the fantastic diversity of our ethnicities in our Penang Community. I would like to say “Kayd Meela Fawl che” to everyone which is Irish language for hundred thousand welcomes!

On behalf of the State of Penang, congratulations to Penang Medical College and their joint-owners, the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and University College Dublin for their remarkable progress over the years.

I understand that PMC students are exclusively attached to Hospital Seberang Jaya as well as Hospital Pulau Pinang. To have two of the world’s oldest and leading medical schools, RCSI and UCD, approximately 230 years and 160 years respectively, working with local public hospitals through PMC is a great joy for us. Not only will their participation ensure PMC’s graduate doctors are globally recognised but it will also encourage knowledge and expertise sharing to meet the standards of the Irish Medical Council as well as other international standards. It is the State’s expectation for PMC-RCSI-UCD and Hospital Seberang Jaya to continue fostering this close relationship that will benefit not only the community in Penang and Malaysia but also students from all over the world.

As an added bonus, I know that many of PMC’s graduate doctors return to work in Malaysian hospitals and this can only mean the eventual improvement of our healthcare system. This can only further the State’s and Country’s reputation for quality healthcare and advance medical tourism industry.

And this year, for the first time in its history, PMC, RCSI and UCD are offering scholarships amounting to over RM2 million in totals, for Malaysian students applying to enter PMC in September 2015. We look forward to the announcement of the inaugural recipients of these scholarships this year.

It is a great honour for us that PMC students graduate with Irish medical degrees and that PMC is the only medical school outside the EU whose graduates can apply for internship in Ireland. Also, students who have undergone housemanship or internship at any one of our Malaysian Government Hospitals will also be recognised by the Irish Medical Council.

We in Penang gives assurances to two basic rights to education – the right to pursue excellence and get recognition, and the right of freedom of opportunity to be the best we want to be. You are free to be what you are or wear what you like in Penang.

PMC, to date, has more than 1,200 graduates and we expect to see growing international appeal as we move towards achieving global education hub status. Congratulations on the opening of PMC Clinical Skills & Education Centre in Seberang Jaya, as we look forward to the future of PMC.

Thank you.

UCAPAN KETUA MENTERI PULAU PINANG
SEMPENA MAJLIS RUMAH TERBUKA TAHUN BARU CINA 2015
PERINGKAT NEGERI PULAU PINANG

Sekian,terima kasih.

THE INAGURATION FESTIVAL OF INDIA IN MALAYSIA 2015

Posted in Dari Meja Ketua Menteri

SPEECH BY CHIEF MINISTER OF PENANG
DURING THE INAGURATION FESTIVAL OF INDIA IN MALAYSIA 2015
AT PENANG
15 MARCH 2015
DEWAN SRI PINANG

On behalf of the State Government and the people of Penang, let me first of all extend a very warm welcome to all of you, especially to His Excellency Shri T.S. Trimurti, High Commissioner of India to Malaysia. I would also like to thank His Excellency for inviting me to this Inauguration of Festival of India in Malaysia 2015 at Penang.

This is the first time the Indian High Commission is organizing the Festival of India together with the Penang State Government. There are four events to be held in Penang which starts from today until April 2015 that includes Photo Exhibition of Chola Temples of India, IT & Space Multimedia Exhibition and Malayalam Film Festival. We must thank to the Indian High Commission to initiate these events which is being organized in several cities across the country especially in George Town which is in the World Heritage listing. The Penang state government is happy to assist in our small way.

As you know, Bharatanatyam is a very special genre of dance. It is the kind of dance that defines the beauty, heritage, history and culture of India, where it comes from. Moreover, as George Town is also a UNESCO Heritage city, rich with music, dance and culture, this event is perfect for Penang.

Since the World Heritage listing of George Town in 2008, Penang has seen a big increase of visitors and tourists both local and from abroad over the last few years. As Penang aspires to be international and intelligent city, we must also host world class events. The Festival of India will go a long way towards Penang taking the initial steps to transform Penang into the music, dance and cultural capital of Malaysia.

As we all know, Penang has many things to offer. We have beautiful heritage buildings, a rich mix of culture and of course, mouth watering foods especially the best street food in the world! Penang has also been chosen as the location for filming not just Asia but also Europe.
Penang has been chosen as the film location for the television drama series Indian Summers following an extensive global search for a suitable site. Indian Summers, was shown to roaring success to 5 million viewers in February in the UK by Channel 4 and has become Channel 4’s best performing drama in more than 2 decades. The first season’s 10-part series cost 10 million pounds, and the second season of filming has been committed for next month.
Indian Summers tells the story of the final years of British colonial rule in India. The fact that it had to be filmed in Penang, is another close cultural and historical connect between Penang and India as well as our former colonial master, Great Britain. This shows the state’s international appeal as a UNESCO World Heritage site, her beautiful heritage structures and natural wonders which makes it a home away from home not just for locals but for visitors all over the world whether from Europe or Asia.

Today's event will help to nurture the relationships between Penang and India. Penang is fast becoming a cultural and arts hub in Malaysia with world-class events like month-long George Town Festival, International Jazz Festival and the Tropfest Short Film festival. I hope the Festival of India can grow to be bigger in the years to come and contribute to strengthening the relationship between the people-to-people relationship between Penang in Malaysia and India.

Before I end my speech, I would like to thank everyone involved in organizing the Festival of India 2015, especially to His Excellency, Shri T.S. Trimurti. With that, thank you very much and wish your festival a great success.

MAJLIS PELANCARAN SEBERANG PERAI ARENA(SPA) Di BANDAR SEBERANG JAYA

MAJLIS PELANCARAN SEBERANG PERAI ARENA(SPA) Di BANDAR SEBERANG JAYA,

PADA HARI SABTU, 14 MAC 2015, JAM 10.00 PAGI
UCAPAN OLEH LIM GUAN ENG,
KETUA MENTERI PULAU PINANG

To enhance the facilities, a total of 491 on-grid car parks (with an additional 7 car parks for the physically challenged), 77 motorcycles parks and bus stop will be provided with the view to ensure good traffic control and dispersal.

The completion of the Seberang Perai Arena will be an added boost to PDC’s township of Bandar Seberang Jaya, complete with residential houses for all stratum of society, supported with good and modern amenities and commercial centres like Sunway Township, Sunway Carnival, The Light hotel which has recently started business, a hospital, public library, various places of worship, government institutions and recreation centres.

The state government is extremely proud to be able to complete an international project in Seberang Perai. In order to ensure this SPA project remains as an international repute with world-class management, an open competitive tender will be held to select its operator.

This Seberang Perai Arena project with its banqueting and sporting/recreational facilities will complement and integrate with the adjacent Tunku Linear Park, managed by MPSP and the Sony Sports Complex, making the entire project enclave the largest integrated socio-civic recreational centre for the people of Bandar Seberang Jaya.

SPA should be officiated by YB Permatang Pauh himself in appreciation by the state government for his contribution. This is the "gift” in a form of development to society and not for one’s own benefit. In spite of the fact that Dato Seri Anwar could not officiate SPA, he will always live in our memories for his services and loyalty to the voters of Permatang Pauh.

I am pleased to state that this Seberang Perai Arena project is very much in line with the aspirations of the State Government to make Penang a Cleaner, Greener, Safer place to Work, Live and Play. I also wish to congratulate Penang Development Corporation for working hard to complete this project, which is part of its Corporate Social Responsibility of giving back to the community.

Over the years, PDC has been carrying out such CSR activities, inclusive of providing subsidised affordable homes, provision of public infrastructure and amenities, carrying out repainting jobs for its high rise buildings and greening of Penang through landscaping projects.

I also wish to congratulate PDC which has used its in house expertise, through its subsidiary company PDC Consultancy Sdn Bhd to design this Seberang Perai Arena project. I am confident that PDC, which has initiated its own transformation through Change Management and implementation of Balanced Scorecard and Performance Management, will continue to grow in strength in the years to come, providing better and more efficient delivery of its goods and services.

On this note, I now have the pleasure of launching the Seberang Perai Arena project, build for the people of Penang.

Thank you.
