Distinguished Guests,

Members of the media

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good afternoon to all of you.

I would like to congratulate and express my appreciation to GAMA for making Penang proud by gaining an entry in the Malaysia Book of Records as the first registered “Oldest Supermarket and Departmental Store in Malaysia”

My appreciation also goes to the Malaysia Book of Records for your continuous efforts in recognising the outstanding achievements of our fellow Malaysians and of the “extraordinary happenings” in the country.

The history of GAMA goes all the way back to 1967 when its doors were first opened as the original “Pulau Pinang Supermarket” at Penang Road. Since then, GAMA is known for its long service and retail contribution to our Penang community and economy. Despite stiff competition from other shopping malls, GAMA has been able to hold your ground and retain your customer base. This is truly remarkable!

I hope that this recognition given to GAMA by the Malaysia Book of Records today will serve as an impetus for all of us especially Penangites, to persevere and to achieve our respective goals and to overcome all challenges for the betterment of our beloved Penang.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am aware that many Penangites have experienced financial hardships and personal difficulties during the COVID-19 pandemic over the past 2 years. However, I’m confident that we Penangites will learn from this pandemic experience, and with our resilience, we shall be able to pick ourselves up and rise again!

I believe the slogan of GAMA – We serve you better – also applies to all of us, the stakeholders of Penang. Regardless of whether one is in the Penang state government, the city council, the tourism industry or the retail industry, each and every one of us has a role to play towards achieving the ideals in the Penang2030 Vision.

Together, we can make Malaysia tick again despite the wasted 2 years because we have so much to offer to our fellow Malaysians as well as international visitors.

Lastly, to all of you who are here…. happy shopping in GAMA; and to GAMA, Heartiest Congratulations!

Thank you.
