Dear fellow Malaysians and German friends,

This evening marks the 46th year of Oktoberfest in Penang, and is my utmost privilege to join the celebration as the 5th Chief Minister of Penang!

I am happy to note that the Malaysian-German Society in Penang has always been supportive in maintaining the warm friendship and cultural links between our two countries. The fact that MGS has been continuously organizing this traditional German festival in Penang for decades with great success is not only a celebration of German culture but also a reflection of brotherhood, family and togetherness.

While detractors have tried to disrupt last year’s Oktoberfest celebration in Kuala Lumpur, we were fortunate that the German community and friends in Penang stood united in rising to the challenge to make Oktoberfest here, better and safer.

And where unity is concerned, I would like to congratulate the German community in Penang and worldwide for having recently celebrated the Day of German Unity on 3 October 2018. While I was unable to attend the celebration in Penang, I believe the German reunification was and will always be an important milestone in world history.

I hope MGS continues to be the bridge that enables inter-cultural exchanges between the Germans and Malaysians through its activities. Thank you to the organizing committee and all parties involved for the hard work in ensuring that Oktoberfest remains as an annual highlight. Wishing everyone a great and fun-filled evening ahead.

Bis nächstes Jahr!
