The Silver Jubilee Home Citizen Day Celebration
Speech by Chief Minister of Penang
At The Silver Jubilee Home Citizen Day Celebration
Sunday, 7th October 2018,
Firstly, let me wish everyone present a Happy Senior Citizens’ Day which the Silver Jubilee Home for the Aged celebrates on the first week of October each year and this day dedicated to all senior citizens in recognition of their past contribution to society and to remind our community that these people are an important part of our society.
Senior citizens are important to us all as they say “kjia you yi lao, ru you yi bao” Over the past 83 years Silver Jubilee Home has been providing shelter, food and care for old people who have no one to support them in their twilight years.
Starting from very basic shelters in the initial years, the accommodation has been upgraded a few times to what we see today, a modern complex of cluster homes completes with medical wards, physiotherapy centre, dining hall, recreation facilities and a lot of green open space.
Meals for residents whether in the cluster units or the medical wards are prepared by a dedicated team of chefs, workers and volunteers in the kitchen. All these benefits that the residents of Silver Jubilee Home enjoy are provided free of charge.
I wish to record my appreciation to the Tan Sri Dato Seri Tan Kok Ping as Executive Advisor and Trustee of the Home and the General Committee led by its Chairman Mr Saw Soon Kooi for the fine work in seeing to the upgrading to the accommodation and facilities of the Home and the wellbeing of the residents.
Not only are residents enjoying accommodation and food, but the Committee is also making every effort to organising activities such as Xiang Kong, karaoke, batik painting and outings for residents to participate and enjoy a more eventful and meaning stay in the Home.
I understand quite several your residents help in the Recycling Centre and the Kitchen and in doing so make themselves useful and keep themselves active and fit both mentally and physically.
Of course, all these efforts will not be possible without the strong support of donors, well-wishers and support groups who have generously contributed donations both in kind and cash as well as those contributing their services in one way or another.
