Ladies and Gentlemen
A very good afternoon to all of you.
First and foremost, on behalf of the Penang State Government and the ‘E-Learning Computer Program’ task force, I would like to extend our sincere gratitude towards OSRAM Opto Semiconductors (M) Sdn Bhd for their kind support towards our E-Learning initiative.
I am greatful that OSRAM has donated 200 units of used computers to help the underprivileged students in obtaining their personal digital device to pursue their studies. The donation from OSRAM and others from the corporate sector, has certainly enabled us to take another step forward in alleviating the adverse effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.
To date, we have distributed 749 units of free computers to eligible students and 97 units to 6 selected schools in Penang, with the aim of helping them to adapt to the new norm. 300 units of the used computers, including the 200 computers from OSRAM, are still in process to be refurbished.
Taking this opportunity, I would like to express my deepest appreciation to the Penang E-Learning Computer Task Force led by YB Puan Chong Eng for their initiative and efforts in obtaining and distributing the E-learning devices to eligible students.
I am pleased to hear that, even though schools have reopened, this programme will continue to be implemented in order to bridge the inequality gap caused by the digital divide. The initiatives to be continued within the framework of the E-Learning Computer Program Task Force include:
1. Laptop loan scheme.
2. Used computer grant scheme.
I strongly believe that, through the concerted efforts of the Penang E-Learning Computer Task Force, state agencies, private and corporate sectors, NGOs as well as the public, we will be able to successfully develop our local students in this tech-driven world and together build a healthy pipeline of talents for the future.
As such, I hope that more organizations from various sectors and even individuals from the public will join us in this meaningful programme.
Thank you.
